How Much Should You Spend on Marketing?

By Vantage Team · May 28, 2026 · 2 min read

Most small businesses set their marketing budget one of two ways: whatever's left over, or a number that sounds right. Both are guesses. Here's a simple, defensible way to decide — and where that money should actually go.

The rule of thumb

A common benchmark is 5–10% of revenue for an established business that wants to maintain its position, and 10–20% for one trying to grow aggressively or launch something new. If you're doing $500,000 a year and want to grow, that's roughly $50,000–$100,000 annually. It feels like a lot until you compare it to the cost of staying invisible.

Start from the goal, not the percentage

Percentages are a sanity check, not a plan. Better: decide how many new customers you want, what one is worth to you over their lifetime, and what it currently costs to acquire one. If a customer is worth $2,000 and costs $200 to acquire, spending more to get more is a no-brainer. If you don't know those numbers, that's the first thing to fix — you're flying blind.

Where the money should go

Split it roughly three ways: the foundation (brand, website, and the basics that make everything else work), demand capture (showing up when people are already looking — search, your Google profile, referrals), and demand generation (ads and content that create interest — social, video, campaigns). Skew toward capture first; it's cheaper and converts faster.

The mistake that wastes it

Spreading a small budget across five channels so thin that none of them work. You'd rather dominate one channel than sprinkle on all of them. Pick where your best customers actually are, spend enough there to matter, measure it, then expand once something works.

Measure so you can spend more

The goal isn't to spend less on marketing — it's to spend confidently because you know what it returns. Track what a lead costs and what a customer is worth. Once marketing reliably makes money, the budget question answers itself: spend as much as you profitably can.
